Dental
Specialties Defined: the American Dental
Association currently recognizes nine dental specialties.
After completing four years of dental school, prosthodontists
-specialists in Prosthodontics- and periodontists
-specialists in Periodontics- receive an additional
three year of specialized training in an American
Dental Association accredited program.
•
Prosthodontics
is one of the oldest specialties recognized
by the American Dental Association. It is the specialty
responsible for diagnosis, rehabilitation and maintenance
of patients with complex clinical conditions involving
missing teeth or deficient teeth and/or craniofacial
tissues. The essence of the specialty is expert treatment
planning. The field of Prosthodontics continues to
evolve owing to a better understanding of the biology
of the oral cavity and the introduction of new techniques
and improved biomaterials. In that respect, Implant
Prosthodontics pertains to the replacement of missing
teeth by restorations attached to dental implants.
• Periodontics
is also one dental specialties recognized
by the American Dental Association. It is the specialty
responsible for diagnosis, prevention and treatment
of diseases affecting the gums & supporting structures
of the teeth. A periodontist also places dental implants
to help you function better as well as improve the
health and appearance of your smile.
